SPORTS Football Predictions: A Second Slice Richard L Gale bites off as much as he can chew, analyzing 152 teams Preseason predictions are like having your cake and eating it. First of all, there's the print version of The American, which, due to frivolous things such as news, reviews and the like, keeps football previews in bite–size chunks [okay, enough with the food analogies — Ed]. Second, because of print deadlines, most of the print edition NFL and NCAA previews were written in July. So, barely have a few Favre references been thrown in, and the presses begun to roll, before Osi Umenyiora and Shawne Merriman are out of the picture (oh, wait, Merriman's back — see what I mean?), and JT O'Sullivan becomes the 49ers QB. So, while the college entries below are an expansion on our print edition, you might consider our late-breaking NFL entries our definitive predictions. Of course, the St Louis Rams will still be terrible, we'll still be talking about the Chargers and Cowboys in late January, and the Bulldogs, Trojans and Buckeyes are still the main college contenders. Nothing changed there. But that middle ground — that deserves a little closer examination...
