Civilians Invited To Marine Vet Charity Events

London Detachment 1088, Marine Corps League is inviting members of the expat community and their friends to take part in two special events, aimed at raising money for their chosen charities: the Semper Fi Fund which provides relief for soldiers who have been injured in combat, and Toys for Tots, which helps less fortunate children experience the joy of the holidays by providing them with toys during the Season.

Generally, civilians aren't allowed to attend the Marine Corps Ball but this is your chance. The US Ambassador normally attends, to honor those who protect his Embassy, and key note speakers have included Medal of Honor winners, Generals, and key diplomats. This year, the Ball is being held on November 2 in the historic Painted Hall of the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich. Tickets are limited to 320, and the cost of is £250 per person.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to train like a Marine? Here's your chance. Abseiling (or rappelling) is the controlled descent down a rock face using a rope. Now, London boasts few mountains so how about going over the top of "The Stoop", Harlequins Rugby Stadium under the eagle eyes of Royal Marine Commandos. They're looking to raise £5,000 in sponsorship per jump!

Of course, if you can't make these events, the MCL would be happy to accept all donations. www.mcl-london-uk.org
